How to replace and install a Continuous Sweep Silent Clock Mechanism

Your new continuous sweep silent clock movement will render useless if you cannot install it. We have put together a step-by-step instruction guide below to help streamline this process.

  1. Start by taking your clock apart.
  2. Unscrew the old mechanism from the dial face and take off the backpanel. If spring clips have been used instead, remove them to get the clock out of the frame. An old movement can only be released if you can access the clock’s hands.
  3. If the clock hands are held on with friction, all of them can be pulled off with relative ease.
  4. Use pliers to loosen the hex nut that sits between the clock face and hands. This will free the movement from the clock. Sometimes the mechanism will be housed on the clock back so that it does not move around.
  5. At this point, place the removable metal hanger(if any) on the shaft of your new silent clock movement.
  6. Top it off with a rubber/plastic gasket so that it lies between the mechanism and the back of the clock.
  7. Now slide the movement shaft through the hole at the center of your clock case.
  8. Place a washer on the part that threads through.
  9. Use a hex nut for a finger-tight fix. This will secure the new silent running continuous sweep motor in place.
  10. Put on the new/existing clock hands. They should be parallel to each other and lined up at 12 o clock.
  11. Before you set the time, replace the battery on its slot.

How to buy the Best Continuous Sweep Silent Clock Mechanism

A clock’s mechanism will determine whether it will run silently or with a clicking sound. For the former, a continuous sweep clock mechanism has to be used. Here the sweeping second hand will move silently around the clock dial. These non-ticking quartz movements can be used to repair and build clocks alike. They will run quietly and keep accurate time. However, you have to consider the factors below before you buy one.

Size of the Movement Shaft

It is critical that you get the right size replacement/new clock movement that fits perfectly. The measurements needed are the overall length of the center hand shaft and threaded length. A digital caliper or ruler can be used for this. For the total shaft length, measure from the movement housing to the tip of the shaft. To use glass infront of your clock dial, there should be enough clearance here. Allow extra room to add a second hand or a cap nut on the minute hand. A long shaft can always be shimmed down by using a pair of washers. However, a shorter hand shaft cannot be used.

The threaded portion of the shaft will go through the clock dial material and secure the movement. This threaded shaft length should be enough to fit through the thickness of the mounting surface. You should also ensure there is an extra 1/8” to add mounting hardware such as hex nut and washer. The threaded portion will be absent on clock movements that have a push on style.

The shaft diameter is important too. The diameter of your clock dial’s mounting hole should be large enough so that the movement’s shaft fits through it.

Clock hands

Most silent clock mechanism kits will often come with one or several sets of clock hands. They will have different styles and lengths to meet your needs. You should get the set that looks best on your clock face.

To determine the clock hand size, measure your clock face’s diameter. Divide it by two to get the length of second hand that can be used. For clock hands longer than 4.5”, your silent clock mechanism needs to have a continuous sweep high torque motor. The extra length means more weight which will need a clock movement that can provide more torque.

You may reuse existing clock hands too. In this case, your old clock hands must have the same mount style as the new clock movement.

Hooks for wall mount

Sometimes your replacement sweeping mechanism will come with extra parts like metal hooks. This is very handy if you want to hang your clock but there are no hooks to do so. In this case, switching the old mechanism for one that has a built-in hook will do the trick. It will fit over the mechanism box’s shift and stick out so that you can mount the whole clock.

Final thoughts on the Best Silent Clock Movement Mechanisms

If you dont mind getting your hands dirty to fix an old, noisy clock or make a non-ticking one – seriously consider the continuous sweep clock movements mentioned above. If replacing a clock mechanism seems too much of a fuss, there are other ways to make a clock tick quieter.  Just get a non-ticking wall clock for the most convenient solution.
